Preliminary Task Evaluation

Preliminary Task Evaluation0

Quality of summary
My honest evaluation – what was done well and what was not of good standard? Try to cite specific examples and moments from your video
Examples of strategies, good practices and skills that my group and I will put into place to ensure a main production of high quality.
Quality of holding a shot steady
-This was good throughout the vast majority of our short film.
-However, one shot of our film (0.25-0.34)
was very slightly unsteady. Next time we need to ensure that all of our shots are held steady in order to enhance the quality of our film.
-In order to ensure that all of our shots are steady for our next film, we will use a tripod and when shooting at odd angles, we will make sure that the tripod is balanced steadily at the right angle.
Quality of the framing of shots
-This was successful throughout the entirety of our preliminary task.
-Next time we must ensure that our character does not take up the whole of the frame so that the audience is not able to see what is going on (unless this is planned in our storyboard). For example, from 0.50-0.53 in our film our character walks out of shot but by doing so takes up the entire frame so that all the audience can see is black (the colour of their clothes).
-For our principal task our group will make sure that the quality of framing of different shots is high by looking at the camera before we shoot the scene/shot. This will allow us to look at the framing of the shot before we actually start filming, further allowing us to maintain a high quality of framing our shots.
Quality of shooting material appropriate to the task set, i.e. the content of your film pre and post editing was consistent with the exam directives
-We followed the instructions we were given for our preliminary task very successfully and made effective use of them.
-For our principal task, our group will ensure that we fully follow any instructions given to us in order to maintain high quality work.
Quality of selecting mise-en-scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting
Our group did not particularly make very effective use of mise-en-scene as we did not have a wide variety of props and we only used subtle and rather dull colours.
-Also, our quality of lighting was not always successful during the entirety of our short film.
-Although this lack of props and colour was largely intentional, next time we should experiment more with mise-en-scene to make our film more interesting and eye-catching for the audience.
-We must ensure that we have better lighting next time as well which remains constant (unless our storyboard has planned otherwise) throughout our film.
Quality of editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer
-1.34-1.37
-Our use of editing was relatively effective in conveying meaning to the audience. For example, during the beginning of our film, when our character is walking up the stairs (from 0.34-0.53) there are quite frequent cuts which represent the characters’ nervousness.
-However, overall, we could have made more effective use of editing to convey meaning.
-Next time we will ensure that we make a wider use of editing in order to portray meaning to the audience. One way in which we will do this is by matching the genre of the film to the editing. For example, if we are making an action film we will include a range of frantic, rapid cuts to represent the desperate and frenzied movements of the characters.
Quality of using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set
-Our group’s use of sound for this task was rather successful. For example, the background music we use is subtle so the audience does not fully notice it but it still manages to slightly build up a certain amount of tension in our film.
-On the other hand, we did not really emphasise the sound of our short film and did not widely use sound.
-For our next task, we will make more use of sound in order to convey meaning more as well as to catch the audience’s interest.
Quality of positioning and movements of actors
-This was very successful throughout our film and added to the quality of the framing of our different shots.
-In order to maintain this high quality, we will make sure that our actors are correctly positioned before we actually start filming.
Quality of group planning, meeting targets and organisation
-This was successful as all members of our group contributed to this task.
-Our organisation was of good quality as each member of our group was allocated a certain job. For example, during the editing of our film I was responsible for finding the background music/soundtrack.
-Perhaps next time, as a group we will set more specific targets and set ourselves certain deadlines on which we need to meet these targets, in order to maintain high quality work.
Group dynamics i.e. how did your group work together?
-Our group worked rather well together and there were few disagreements.
-If someone had an issue to discuss we would always listen to them and talk about it and then make a compromise or follow their idea if it ensured that the quality of our film would be better.
-Next time we will ensure that we all contribute ideas towards our project and that everyone plays an important role in the production of the film.
Other points of evaluation (e.g. equipment related, etc.)
-Overall my group’s preliminary task was rather successful and was well-storyboarded and well-shot.
-However, next time in order to further improve the quality of our work we will make sure that our group always co-operates with one another as this plays a significant role in the success of film production and filmmaking.
-Also, we will make more effective use of mise-en-scene to make or film a more interesting piece of work.
